The Delphi Charioteer and Monumental Greek Bronze Statuary: New Perspectives in the so-called Severe Style Period
Organised by the Ecole Française d'Athènes
In the framework of WP5-A2, Rémy Chapoulie, professor and Vincent Baillet, postdoctoral, presented their first results on the application of SIR3D (3D referenced information system) on the Aurige of Delphi, a large antique bronze of the 5th century BC in the severe style, at the international colloquium organized by the École Française d'Athènes du 1er au 3 décembre 2022.
Since 2017, the École française d’Athènes and the Ephorate of Antiquities of Phocis (General Directorate of Antiquities of the Hellenic Ministry of Culture and Sports) have fostered a broad partnership with the Musée du Louvre, the Centre de Recherche et de Restauration des Musées de France and several other institutions, in order to undertake an ambitious program of re-examination of the Charioteer of Delphi, based on the contribution of new technologies. These examinations and analyses will be presented and put into perspective during this conference, organized under the auspices of the École française d’Athènes. This meeting will allow us to resume the issue of the elaboration of monumental Greek bronzes from the last decades of the 6th century to the 4th century B.C., with particular emphasis, thanks to the study of the Charioteer of Delphi, on the so-called Severe Style period.
