Research Interests

My research projects stem from the interest in better understanding the production, conservation, perception and digital restoration of coloured cultural items. The principal aim is to investigate the colours' origin and degradation processes in various artistic and archaeological polychromatic objects (e.g., ceramics, marbles, monumental sculptures, textiles, paintings), implementing non-invasive and mainly contactless analytical techniques. Natural degradation of the pigment or dyes, landfill, past restoration, lighting, and use are just a few of the factors that may affect our interpretation of coloured objects and surfaces. Furthermore, exploratory phases of experimental archaeology will be carried out: the construction of a database of reference spectra, through the manufacturing of mock-up samples, will allow a straightforward identification of historical objects and will ensure a better understanding of the processes of colour degradation (through ageing artificial).
