Research Interests

I am a researcher in geomorphology and geoarchaeology. I am working on the relationships between landscape organisation and human evolution. I try to reconstruct the landscape evolution in and around the archaeological sites by the use of geomorphology, 3D mapping (lasergrammetry, photogrammetry and geomorphological mapping), and chronological constraints (morphostratigraphy, burial and exposure dating methods such as quartz ESR, OSL, cosmogenic nuclides).

My approach covers the full extent of the human evolution, with a specific focus on the Palaeolithic in karstic environments (cave systems). It aims to reconstruct past interactions between human groups and their physical environment. Most of my study objects are located in cave systems and rock shelters that contain rock art and traces of organization of the underground space by past human groups (for instance: Chauvet cave, Ardèche Valley; Borologa shelters, Australia; Bruniquel cave, Aveyron Valley; Cussac cave, Dordogne Valley).

Understanding the space organization and its evolution during the passage of past human groups can provide new constrains to understand the human behaviors on each site (preservation, palaeo-architecture, rock art, type of occupation…), but also the relationships between occupied places at the regional scale (proximity of site complexes and highly visible landscape features), and the sense of place of Middle and Late Palaeolithic groups.

Technical Skills

Geomorphology (fluvial deposits, karstogenesis (cave systems), karst-river relationships). Topography (3D survey, 3D mapping, landscape evolution reconstruction, space organisation by past human groups). Absolute chronology (Quartz ESR, U-series and burial 26Al/10Be, Bayesian hierarchical modelling). Mapping human imprint in the underground space (space organisation, traces, rock art, palaeo-architecture). Geoarchaeology and Sedimentology (cross section of sediments, source-to-sink approach, drawing). Geophysics (ERT tomography of limestone and fluvial deposits). Geochemistery (XRF, XRD).
