Research Interests

Guilhem Mauran is an archaeometrist specialist of southern African Stone Ages ochre, pigment and residues. His research focus on the emergence and diversification of past communities’ economic, technical and cultural behaviors. Through the analyses of Middle and Later Stone Age ochre exploitation, he investigates past populations technical knowledge and skills transmission, coloring raw materials circulation, past population procurement strategies, mobility and trade networks.

To understand as much as possible past ochre exploitation, he carries out experiments, he analyses geological ochre outcrops as well as archaeological ochre fragments, residues and pigment through multi-scalar analysis including but not restricted to petrography, X-ray fluorescence spectrometry, infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffractometry, inductively coupled plasma-optical-emission- spectrometry and inductively coupled plasma-mass-spectrometry. His mains fieldworks are located in mountainous ranges of southern Africa: the Erongo mountains (Namibia), the south African Waterberg plateau (South Africa) and the Maloti-Drakensberg (South Africa and Lesotho).
